Fundamental Health

Holistic Medicine views each person as a unique, complete, whole being.  From a holistic perspective, our health expresses how we live our live, because everything effects everything else.  In other words, how we think, what we believe, and how we react emotionally, all affect our health just as much as how we eat and exercise.  Research studies have shown that each cell in our body perceives and reacts to our emotions.  This is true of joy, contentment and tranquility, as much as it is of worry, fear, resentment, and agitation.  Since everything functions as a unit, holistic medicine strives to discover and correct the source of the imbalance, so that the whole system can return to health physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Thus, our goal is to provide you with the tools and methods to learn about your health, along with a complete treatment experience which allows you to experience balance, stability, and well being -- the optimum internal environment for healing.  We encourage you to explore how to find and maintain a healthy balance in your life whether you are living with a major illness such as cancer or multiple sclerosis, or simply working to improve your overall health by strengthening your balance and resiliency.  We invite you to experience our meditation room and our spa services to compliment your treatment and enhance your overall well-being.

News Scoop on Trans Fats

Perhaps you have heard that the Food and Drug Administration is going to require food manufacturers to package their products so that the amount of trans fats are listed on the package.  This requirement will go into effect in January of 2006.  Although some companies have begun to change their products and their labels, others have not.

Trans fats occur when oils are process into a solid form.  This process is called hydrogenation.  Trans fats are usually found in fried foods and in cookies, crackers, and cakes.

According to the National Academy of Sciences` Institute of Medicine, trans fats should be avoided.  They are the most harmful type of fats.  The most beneficial type of fats are found in walnuts, fish oil, flax seed oil, and olive oil.

The Effects of Pollution

A recent report by the Women`s Foundation of California presents strong evidence that we are effected not only by what we eat, but also what we breathe, sit upon, walk by, and throw away.  This study finds that women store more fat-soluble toxic materials than men, since men typically have a 2-10 percent lower proportion of body fat.  The study contends that women are bearing the brunt of society`s pollution, to the detriment of their own health as well as the health of their children.

Fat-soluble toxins are everywhere, from the PCB`s banned in the 1970`s to emulsifiers and flame retardants which are in widespread use today.  This study found that women pass along their life long accumulation of toxins to their children during pregnancy and with their breast milk.  Today in the United States, there are an estimated 85,000 synthetic chemicals registered for use.  Most of them have never been tested for human health impacts.

Pain and Addiction

Current studies indicate that over 4 million Americans are addicted to pain killer medications.  Although no one wants to be in pain, long term use of pain killers is very problematic.  Since our whole system works together as a unit, we are very easily habituated to and dependent on anything that reduces our pain whether it is prescription drugs, alcohol, illegal drugs, or over the counter drugs.

Pain is a signal or symptom that our energy is blocked in some way and some part of our system is distressed.  This can be caused by inflammation, deficiency, or structural damage from an injury.  Long term use of pain killers may block the pain, but they typically cause other imbalances and distress in our body in some way.

Pain management is a term used to include pain relieving medicines as well as behavioral and life style changes.  Dietary changes, increased rest and structural support, visualization and relaxation exercises, biomeridian assessment, color therapy, acupuncture, meditation, hypnosis, and shifts in personal beliefs and perceptions through holistic psychotherapy can all be useful in pain reduction.

Beliefs you don`t even know you have can affect what you do and who
you are.  You and your health are a summary of your beliefs and
perceptions, the kind of data you are expecting.    Dr. Bruce Lipton

Did you know..?

These common mistakes diminish the potency of your vitamins and supplements:

Eating foods that are high in iron, especially liver and molasses, reduces the effectiveness of Vitamin E.
Taking your vitamins and supplements with your morning coffee reduces their effectiveness.
After taking an antacid, wait at least 2 hours before taking any vitamins or supplements so that they can be absorbed.

Alzheimer`s Research

Alzheimer`s is one of those conditions that arouses fear in all of us.  No one wants to even consider how devastating it would be to not recognize those we love, or to be unable to carry on a normal conversation.  Until very recently there was very little treatment offered for Alzheimer`s.  Thankfully, researchers are now finding some interesting natural links that appear to play a part in Alzheimer`s disease.

Several studies are finding that a deficiency in Vitamin B12 is critical to memory function and Alzheimer`s prevention.  People with low levels of B12 were 4 times more likely to develop the disease, and Alzheimer`s patients with the least B12 in their blood had the most brain impairment.

New research studies also indicate that Alpha-lipoicacid (ALA) protects the brain and improves memory.  ALA is a powerful antioxidant.  Alzheimer`s patients who were given ALA stabilized; although they did not improve, they stopped getting worse.

At the University of California Researchers have found that curcumin (also known as tumeric) protects the brain from Alzheimer`s.

There are also strong links between Alzheimer`s and aluminum.  Over the past 15 years, many studies have found that aluminum is excessively high in the brain tissue of Alzheimer`s patients.  It is recommended that you avoid aluminum cookware, antacids, foods and beverages in aluminum cans, and antiperspirants with aluminum.

To become exception in caring for the body, one must take stock of the
beliefs one has about it, especially those so ingrained that they`re normally unconscious.  If a person can turn from predicting illness to anticipating
recovery, the foundation for cure is laid.    Dr. Bernie Siegel

If the head and body are to be well, you need to begin by during the soul.    Plato

Know that your first responsibility is not to others, but to yourself.  As you
hoist yourself to a state where you validate the divine potential of your
being, you will elevate others simply by your presence.  Your vibrations and you
as a role model express more than anything you can say or do.    Dr. Valerie Hunt
